Lovely Listening

 Mrs. Wade our school counselor came to teach us about listening skills.  We read a virtual book that our class knows and loves "Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen".  The kids love this character and his interactive stories.  They played a game of listen simon says with Mrs. Wade to practice careful listening.  Attached is a link to more books about Howard and life skills like listening and building friendships.  Enjoy!

Seal of approval

Today Mrs. Seal our school secretary came to visit as our mystery reader.  She shared with a story about her little girl and a magical, pink tutu that gave her courage and confidence to try new things.  Mrs. Seal writes wonderful children's stories and was able to share with the children where she gets ideas (from her own life experiences) how she works on a book (drawing pictures to match words and details to create an experience for her readers) and how above all she never gives up (reinforcing that writing is a process that takes lots of time and lots of trying).  The children loved her story and were able to see that writers write about things/people they love.  I can't wait to see how hearing from our own Barretts' children's author will motivate our heroes to take writing risks of their own!

Sweet, and Salty, and Sour...oh,my!

Today for our 5 senses lesson we explored the sense of taste.  We observed our tongue and noticed taste buds.  We learned that taste bud help our bodies distinguish between sweet, sour, salty and bitter tastes.  The children received three small samples (skittle, goldfish, and sour patch kid) and were asked to predict which taste they would experience when they ate it.  Once we predicted we tried our samples...here are some of the faces I captured!  Priceless and precious!

Masterful Mathematicians

Today we played a game called whole/part bingo.  The children had to roll the dice and then place the cubes on their board.  The game became more tricky as the board filled and they were required to "break numbers" into parts (ex. 6 equals 2 and 4 or 3 and 3).

Next week we will begin using our number knowledge to count beyond 10 and create simple addition problems!

 

Sniffing Sarfari

We learned about our sense of smell today with a sniffing safari adventures.  We identified peppermint, lemon, orange, maple syrup, and banana.  The children enjoyed it so much they were "quizzing" each other at learning centers!  We are such stupendous scientists!

More Mystery Reader Fun!

Today Flynne's mom surprised us with two amazing books at snack.  "The Giving Tree" and "Put Me In The Zoo" were perfect examples of stories with a pattern or rhyme and were a wonderful choices to review character voice and author's purpose.  Thank you to Flynne's mom for the snack and special surprise!

Fall has arrived!

Yesterday we took time to observe our tree in fall.  We noticed the changing color of the tree and grass, the cool breeze in the air, and the many leaves already on the ground.  We believe fall is definitely on its way!
