Scale Exploration

We are getting ready to start our weighing portion of our math unit.  The children loved exploring with our scales.  We learned the difference between heavy and light as well as how to tell if something is equal in weight.

Read N Munch

A big thank you to all our wonderful volunteers.  It was the perfect weather to snuggle in with a yummy snack and a few good books.  Read N Munch is such a great way to practice listening for meaning and enjoying books with expression and character voice.  Thank you to all our volunteers who make reading exciting, engaging, and educational.  We appreciate you!

100th Day Fun!

Happy 100th day of school from the Heroes!  We started our day with a 100 treat, sharing our 100 item hats and creating a "if I had 100 dollars" writing piece.  The children challenged themselves to jump for 100 seconds (this is HARD WORK) and sorted 100 fruit loops into groups of tens with their third grade buddies before stringing them into beautiful 100th day necklaces...and snacks for later!  We read 100th day Jitters and 100 School Days.  Hard to believe how fast time flies when you are busy (learning and) having fun!

Beautiful building

As part of our "children from other lands" unit we have been exploring attributes of our lives as children that are the same and different when compared to children from other parts of the world.  We have talked about clothing, foods, and celebrations.  Yesterday we took a closer look at homes and buildings from different places.  The children broke into teams and looked at three different types of structures, Asian inspired, Russian inspired, and Middle Eastern inspired.  We examined how the buildings looked alike and different and then attempted to build some structures.  They found this team challenge very exciting (be it a true challenge).  They did a beautiful job noticing the hard edges and curves of different types of buildings and comparing them to our sky scrapers and traditional American homes.
