Marvelous Read-N-Munch

Thank you so much to all the family members who share their time with us today during read-n-munch.  It is so important to instill a love of reading in our littlest learners and the best way to learn how to understand books is by listening to lots of them.  Thank you to everyone who share their time and talents with us today!  We appreciate you!

Change Drive

While we were not officially the winner of the change drive I wanted to formally thank everyone who donated.  Our class came in 6th out of all the classes in the school and raised over $102 by ourselves which is AMAZING!  Thank you for your generosity and support of needy readers!

Writers Check List

Today we focused on wonderful writing and our kindergarten check list.  We talked about how "when we think we are done, our work has just begun" (Calkins).  We looked at planning our stories, making sure they have begin, middle, and ends and adding realistic colors to help our readers know the story on our page.  We will also be talking about the importance of words to tell our story and our goal will be to have every child adding words by the end of next week.

Reading Retelling

The past two weeks we have spent a lot of time during reading and writing working on telling stories that share the who, what, and when of stories.  The children have learned about putting stories in order (sequence), retelling with character voice and story language (repeating phrases or words) and sound effects.  They have gotten so excited about retelling stories that yesterday during learning centers a group of six students decided to create their own puppets to retell the stories of the three little pigs, the three billy goats gruff, and Goldilocks and the three bears!  I love to see them transferring their excitement about books and story telling to all parts of their day.

Such a SIGHT!

Today we took at look our sense of sight.  We read the book "The Looking Book" and had the chance to draw our eye and use magnifying glasses and lookers to explore our sense of sight outside.  We did an observation walk and found some wonderful fall marvels!
We also welcomed Evie's grandmas as our mystery reader.  She read us about Michigan called "M is for Mittens".  The children loved learning about Michigan's special history and beautiful landmarks!

Awesome Apple Day!

We couldn't have welcomed the first day of fall with any more warmth and excitement than what surrounded our apple day festivities.  The children loved learning about their five senses through our apple explorations and did a beautiful job reading their apple books and writing about their favorite fall apple snacks.  A huge thank you goes out to our wonderful apple helpers.. Ms.C, Ms. DP, Ms. B, and Big and little Ms. C, thank you so much for cutting apples and assisting with our apple day projects! I appreciate your gift of time and effort so very much!  Here are some of the high lights from our day today! Enjoy and happy start to fall!
