We have been doing such a great job with our opinion writing. The kids have now experimented with opinion letters, posters, and books. We talked about how the opinions we communicate need to be things we care a lot about or want to change. Just like the Lorax our words are powerful and can change the world. We are practicing hard so that we are ready to share with you on May 16th.

Think Spring
Thank you to Laila's grandparents for donating the wonderful flower pots and flowers for our science unit. Today we reviewed the necessary items a plant needs to survive. We labelled our pots, filled them with soil, put seeds in several places, watered them, and then placed them in the sun to grow. We are excited to watch these new living things go through their life cycles.

Our new "class pets"
We are so excited to announce our new arrivals...the LADYBUGS are HERE!!!
The kids were thrilled to observe our new "pets" and record the life cycle of a ladybug. We noticed our ladybugs already passed out of their egg stage and are now active larvae. Stay tuned, we have another week or two until our next stage occurs.

Just a quick reminder that the volunteer breakfast is coming up next Thursday. Please be sure to mark your calendar and join us as we celebrate you and all you've done to help us succeed this year!

Opinion/Persuasive Writing
Today we began our new unit on opinion writing. We learned that an opinion is anything we believe, like/dislike, think, or prefer/choose. The children practiced forming an opinion and stating their opinions. We briefly talked about how opinions can be changed as we become persuaded or convinced by others. We practiced using a continuum. I gave the phrase, vanilla is the best ice cream flavor and the children chose, yes, no or unsure. The "yes" kids tried to convince the others why vanilla was the best and then the "no" kids had their turn. We repeated the exercise and talked about what persuaded the "unsure" kids where to move.
We will be getting more practice at forming opinions and persuading our families this week. We will be looking for your feed back and responses as we draft letters to you about something we think we should have or do...to prepare yourself please watch the link below! I think we have some very persuasive personalities in this group of super heroes!
Enjoy!

Expert Authors!
The children are continuing to work tirelessly on publishing their first books digitally. I have encouraged the children to publish as many pages as possible while still focusing on exploring the Pixie publishing tool (we will be publishing digitally for the remainder of the school year). Here are our latest amazing published pieces...keep checking back, there are more to come tomorrow!
Living Things
Yesterday for our living things unit we explored what makes something living versus non-living. We learned about the many characteristics of living things and then played a living/non-living sorting game. To dive deeper, we looked at where living things live today. We discovered many different types of habitats and will be exploring how these habitats affect what animals choose to eat, how they protect their young, and what other types of animals they are exposed too. We will also be creating habitat homes in teams during the course of this unit!

Delightful Day!
Happy birthday to our sweet Josie! We celebrated the day with doughnuts, apple juice and of course some "ice cream and cake". We are getting so big and looking more and more like first graders every day!
Happy birthday Miss Josie!
Non-Fiction Sneak Peek
We are in our final week of non-fiction writing and the children are working hard to publish their expert books. We are SO excited to share our hard work with you. Today we had a few kindergartners finish their first books. Please check out our incredible digital book (as a sneak peek as to whats coming)...we are amazing authors!
Spring Tree
This is the Heroes and their spring tree (LA). The tree has blossoms on it (ER). We love our spring tree because it gives us lots of answers to science (LH). There is flowers around our tree (BT). Flowers do not grow if you say "grow, grow" (AH). Flowers grow by air, water, and sunshine (DU). Flower need lots of sunshine to grow (BS). Flowers need soil and dirt to keep them nice, but you don't have to put dirt (AC).

Purple Cow
Today we had a special visitor who told us the story of "the purple cow". We learned how to make a purple cow (a special ice cream drink) just like the story and helped Ms. Sinnokrak write a how-to teaching book. The best part was we got to try them ourselves. We love purple cows and our tummies did too!
A big thank you to Mrs. Seal, the author of "The Purple Cow" and inspiration behind this fun tradition. We love our resident author!
