Card System

Hello families!
I hope you are adjusting to the blog and are checking here frequently!  This is where I communicate the most so as not to overfill your email boxes.  Please know that tomorrow we will be starting our card (behavior) system in the room.  I will explain this more specifically at curriculum night but wanted to give you an overview so you knew what your child is talking about if he/she comes home talking about the card they received that day.
Each child has five colored cards.  Each day, every child begins with a green card which means-great day.  If your child does an exceptional job listening, helping, challenging him/herself then he or she may have the chance to "flip up" to blue which mean-outstanding day.  If your child is having difficultly listening, following directions, or remaining kind he/she may need to flip from the starting green card down to yellow which means-good day but required a reminder.  If the behavior continues or another situation occurs that requires a reminder your child may flip to orange which mean-slow down and think.  At orange card your child will take a think break to make a plan with me to re-group and get back on track for the day.  If another reminder is required your child may flip to red which means-stop and think.  Your child will lose recess time and create a "think sheet" with me to think about what behaviors need to change and how he/she will be communicating about the day with you, the parents.  I will ask that if your child brings home a think sheet you speak with him/her and make a plan together for a better day tomorrow.  You will also need to sign the sheet and return it to school so I know that you have discussed the behavior.
I do not want you to worry if your child seems to be coming home with yellow or orange cards these first few weeks.  I try very hard to set the expectations high for the beginning of the year so that the children know very early how I expect them to behave inside and outside of our classroom walls.  If by mid-September we are starting to see orange or red cards regularly I will be contacting you to come up with some ideas together to help your child succeed in the classroom.
